I carry a gun.. and I voted other for the first poll. More guns doesn't always equal less violence. You need more guns in the hands of the right people. good people. More guns simply means more people who stand a chance at coming home at the end of the day.. I don't see it doing a whole lot to stop most violence.. violence will always find a way. we just have to be ready for it.

Well, I do not carry a gun, but do own several. I do believe that guns do not kill people; people kill people. Sometimes in society, people find it easier to blame the "firearm" instead of taking responsibility and finding the real cause of the tragedy. Which is always the fact that an unfit person gets a hold of a firearm. These are the same people that blame McDonald's for their bad personal culinary choices in food. These are the same people that blame the tobacco industry for their poor health after they took the initiaitive to start smoking. These tragedies will be prevented more if, as a society, we learn to be more objective. Because, just as a firearm in the wrong hands can have tragic consequences, so can a car that is plowed into a group of people. And yet, people do not try to make automobiles illiegal, or try to make them look "evil". There are many things in life that can turn deadly in the wrong hands (even greasy hamburgers and cigarrettes). We need to understand this (collectively in our society) so that we can become a smarter America.

sam (not verified) says: I do believe also that

I do believe also that limiting the number of guns, does not limit the number of gun-related crimes. We must remember that criminals are "criminals" because they commit "illegal" acts. If we were to make guns illegal to own, for instance (or make them more difficult to have), these criminals will still get a hold of them. Just like criminals get a hold of illegal drugs, it will not be a problem for them to get guns. Most of the cocaine and marijuana that comes into the US, comes from Mexico (a country which makes it illegal for the ordinary citizen to own guns), but yet every Mexican drug trafficker has guns. By restricting gun ownership here in America, it will create a demand for the illegal trafficking of guns coming from Mexico. So, the only people affected will be the average American citizen that will be left without protection, not the criminals.

I totally agree with you Sam.

More guns in responsible gun owners hands = Less violence, More guns in unresponsible (criminal) hands = More violence. I think that even if guns were completely eliminated from the world, there are still people with the uges or ignorance to hurt other people. Soon after guns, bows and arrows will be banned, next baseball bats with nails driven though them, then slings and rocks. Even if all these devices of "evil" will be banned, bad people will still be doing bad things. I think the whole tragedy at VaTech could have been stopped or ended earlier if one responsible teacher or student was carrying.

Beef (not verified) says: I choose other, b/c I dont

I choose other, b/c I dont think that having more or less guns will deter someone from aquiring a gun to harm people.
A side note for this is that if there are more guns available, it will be easier for someone to aquire one, but also means there are more people concealing that can stop that person.
Example: The Trolley Square Shooting, there was a man with a concealed weapon that was able to stop the shooter before he hurt another person, and saving one more person makes it worth it.

Cynthi (not verified) says: I voted other on the first

I voted other on the first poll. Neither of the answers is completely correct. I don't believe they are the cause of the violence, but having them doesn't mean that the violence will go down either. I do believe that no tolerance, completely banning all weapons, gun laws normally take the guns away from the people who use them responsibly, having them for thier own protection and don't do anything to take them away from those who shouldn't have them.
